Diesel Fuel Cold Weather Operation Preventative Maintenance Checklist

Vehicles/Equipment

[  ]

Filter Changes: A contaminated filter will clog and trap fuel and may eventually down the vehicle.

[  ]

Filter Size: It's critical to use the manufacturers maximum allowable filter size, 10 micron minimum, 25 micron preferred.

[  ]

Water Separators: Checked daily, any water buildup should be drained immediately.

[  ]

Tank Bottoms: Tank bottoms should be drained to remove particulate contaminants and water. Allow the vehicle to sit overnight before draining to allow contaminants to settle.

[  ]

Fuel caps: Should fit tightly.

[  ]

Vents: Should be checked to be sure that water cannot enter.

Tanks

[  ]

Tank Bottoms: A bottom sampler and water paste should be used to check for water and other contaminants.

[  ]

Fuel pump filters: Should be changed at the beginning of the season and checked regularly.

[  ]

Fills: Should not allow water to enter and should be cleaned off after snow or ice storms.

[  ]

EPA overfill: Should be checked to make sure it is not stuck open allowing water to enter.

[  ]

Vents: Should not allow rain or snow to enter.

Gasoline

Dear Customer:

Please be advised that effective May 1, 2006 New Jersey will start to market Ethanol Enriched Reformulated Gasoline.

Before receiving Ethanol blended product you should adhere to the following:

Investigate the tank history for water problems & take corrective actions as necessary.

Check for tight seals on fill caps and proper water run-off away from fills.

Remove all water bottoms from the tank. Clean tank if necessary.

Equip each pump or dispenser with a water absorption filter.

Check the tank daily with alcohol compatible water finding paste. These pastes are designed for use with Ethanol enriched fuel systems. Alcohols are soluble in fuels when they are water free, but relatively small amounts of water can cause separation of alcohol from the fuel. This is known as phase separation. If this occurs the gasoline layer will have a lower octane and may knock in an engine.

Insuring a clean, water free tank prior to your first Ethanol blended delivery and watching for water intrusion are your best safeguards against phase separation!
