September sees school buses roll again, and for most people that means the end of summer and a return to routine. This edition of The Fuel Focus looks at what these vehicles actually go through in a normal day, because it’s very different from what most engine oils and drivetrain fluids are designed around.

Buses, garbage trucks, police cruisers, and fire trucks spend most of their working hours doing three things: sitting still with the engine running, starting cold, and covering short distances between stops. A tractor-trailer running interstate freight holds a steady speed and temperature for hours at a stretch. None of these municipal vehicles get that. A bus route is pickup, idle, short hop, idle again. A garbage truck idles at the curb, compacts a load, moves fifty feet, and idles again. Police and fire vehicles often run the engine for lights, radios, or climate control long after the vehicle has stopped moving. That is a lot of engine hours without much heat and little sustained load, and manufacturers classify it as severe service even though nothing about it looks extreme on the surface.

Why short trips impact engines more than you’d think

Oil needs time at real operating temperature to do its job. Cold starts and short runs let condensation and unburned fuel build up in the crankcase instead of boiling off, so the oil ends up thinner and more diluted than its mileage would suggest. Soot builds up faster too, since idle-heavy, low-load running produces more of it per mile than steady highway driving, and an oil that isn’t formulated to hold that soot in suspension starts forming sludge well before the odometer would predict. The oil’s ability to neutralize acid, its total base number, also gets used up faster under stop-and-go, so an oil that would run a full interval on a highway truck can be spent early in a bus or refuse truck. Chassis and wheel-end grease take a hit for the same reason: they are designed to reach operating heat and distribute properly, and a truck that never runs more than a few miles at a stretch doesn’t give them the chance.

Automatic transmissions feel it just as much. Constant shifting, sitting in gear at idle, and load changes every few minutes are exactly the conditions Allison built its TES-295 and TES-668 fluid specifications around. Standard passenger car ATF was never built for this duty cycle.

The exhaust system splits into two separate problems

Heavy idling causes trouble in two places downstream of the engine, and they are easy to mix up. The particulate filter is a fuel issue: idle-produced soot can’t be burned off through normal passive regeneration because the exhaust never gets hot enough on its own, so the engine injects extra diesel into the exhaust stream to force an active regen. More idle time means more active regens, which shows up as extra fuel burned, not extra DEF used.

DEF and the SCR system work on the opposite principle. The catalyst needs exhaust temperatures north of 390°F to dose efficiently, and during long idle stretches the exhaust often doesn’t get there. Rather than burning through more fluid, the system cuts back or pauses DEF dosing to avoid crystallization in the lines. The real risk for a heavy-idle fleet isn’t running through DEF faster, it’s NOx aftertreatment that isn’t operating at full efficiency, and a system more sensitive to dosing problems if fluid quality slips.

Matching the fluid to the job it’s actually doing

None of this calls for anything exotic, just products chosen for the actual duty cycle instead of the mileage on the odometer.
